For the tenth time an Oldsmobile has been selected to pace the
Indianapolis 500. A red and white 2001 Aurora will lead the pack at
the 84th Indy 500, scheduled for May 28, 2000.
The 2001 Aurora pace car is powered by a
250-horsepower, 4.0-liter V8 and
will not require engine modifications. The only modifications necessary are
for required safety features such as strobe lights and safety
harnesses.
"ER"
star Anthony Edwards will drive the Aurora pace car. In addition to
being an avid race fan, Edwards has also completed both the beginner and
advanced courses at the Jim Russell Driving School in California. (Check
out press release #1 and
press
release #2 about Anthony Edwards.)
The Aurora was also chosen for pace car duty in 1997, Oldsmobile's most
recent appearance at Indy. Oldsmobile first paced the Indy 500 in 1949
with an Oldsmobile '88', and also held pace car duties in 1960, 1970, 1972,
1974, 1977, 1985, and 1988.
