The redesigned 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo served as pace car for the
1999 Indy 500. 1999 marked the 12th time a Chevrolet had paced the
Indy 500, but the first time for the Monte Carlo nameplate.
The
pace car was driven by comedian and avid car collector Jay
Leno. The
car's graphics scheme features the Tasmanian Devil, highlighting Chevrolet's
advertising agreement with Warner Brothers.
In addition to the Monte Carlo pace cars, Chevrolet also
provided several dozen Camaro Z28 convertibles as festival cars, to be used
for parade duties and as official cars by Indy staff, dignitaries, and
members of the press. Chevrolet dealers did sell a Monte Carlo pace
car replica, but numbers are unavailable at this time.
